Enterprise Architecture

Enterprise architecture is the discipline of aligning an organization's IT systems, business processes, and organizational structure with its overall business strategy at an organization-wide level — distinct from the architecture of any single software system, which addresses one application rather than how dozens of systems and business functions fit together.

Enterprise architecture vs. software architecture

These terms are frequently confused despite operating at very different scopes. Software architecture concerns the structure of a single system — how one application's components fit together internally. Enterprise architecture concerns how many systems, business processes, and organizational structures across an entire company fit together, including systems that don't share code, may be built by different teams or vendors entirely, and span years of accumulated technology decisions. An enterprise architect is typically thinking about the whole organization's IT portfolio and its alignment with business strategy; a software architect is typically thinking about one system's internal design.

What enterprise architecture actually produces

Enterprise architecture work typically produces a roadmap of an organization's current-state IT landscape, a target future state aligned with business strategy, and the transition plan between them — usually documented through models, matrices, and diagrams organized by domain (business architecture, data architecture, application architecture, technology architecture). This isn't abstract documentation for its own sake; it's meant to ensure new systems and initiatives don't duplicate existing capability, integrate coherently with what already exists, and actually serve the business strategy rather than being built in isolation from it.

When it applies

Enterprise architecture practice earns its overhead in large organizations with many interconnected systems, where uncoordinated technology decisions across departments create duplicated capability, integration debt, and strategic misalignment over time. It's particularly valuable during major transformation initiatives — cloud migration, legacy modernization, M&A integration — where understanding the full current-state landscape before making changes prevents costly rework.

When it doesn't apply

Formal enterprise architecture practice, with its associated documentation overhead and governance process, is disproportionate for small organizations with a handful of systems and a small engineering team — the coordination problem it solves doesn't exist at that scale, and the documentation burden outweighs the benefit. At small scale, straightforward technical leadership and direct team communication accomplish the same alignment without the formal framework overhead.
