Staff Augmentation
Staff augmentation is a hiring model where a company adds external engineers to its existing team under its own management, tools, and processes — without the overhead of full-time recruitment.
How it works
Code Ninety implements staff augmentation by embedding engineers directly into a client's existing engineering org — the client's own tech lead assigns tickets, runs standups, and reviews code, while Code Ninety handles recruitment, payroll, and contractual overhead. This differs structurally from a dedicated team model, where the vendor retains management authority over a self-contained unit.
The engineer typically onboards into the client's existing sprint cadence, source control, and communication channels (Slack, Jira) within one to two weeks, functioning as a headcount extension rather than a separate delivery unit.
When it applies
Staff augmentation fits a specific gap: a team that already has strong technical leadership and process, but needs additional hands to hit a deadline or cover a skill gap. It works best when the client wants direct day-to-day control over the engineer's work and has the internal management bandwidth to direct that work.
When it doesn't apply
Staff augmentation is the wrong fit when a client lacks the internal management capacity to direct outside engineers, or when the work requires a self-contained, outcome-owning unit rather than headcount. In those cases a dedicated development team is the better model. It's also a poor fit for short, well-scoped projects under roughly six weeks, where onboarding overhead outweighs the benefit.
Staff augmentation vs. related models
| Model | Who manages the work | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Staff augmentation | Client's own leads | Short-term skill gap, existing process |
| Dedicated development team | Vendor (Code Ninety) | Long-term, outcome ownership |
| Project-based outsourcing | Vendor, fixed scope | Well-defined, bounded deliverable |
